Island Park News

Stories of the people, critters & events of Island Park & its neighbors.

Island Park News is the community facebook page for Island Park, ID, started in memory of Elizabeth Laden. This was the website for the online version of the Island Park News from 2006 until January of 2012. A new website now offers the Island Park News Go to www.islandparknewsonline.com to find out what's happening in the Eastern Idaho’s Yellowstone-Teton Territory.

I have visited friends a number of times in Island Park when I have been seeing clients in either Bozeman or Idaho Falls. I work for a progressive software company. We are often hired to oversee custom application development for companies requiring specialized, industry-specific needs that are usually outside the scope of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) programs. Often times companies buy COTS components thinking that they will reduce overall system-development costs since components can be bought or licensed instead of being developed from scratch. However, when a company utilizes over the counter COTS software, they’re at the whim of the company that built the software. Imagine the disruptions that could occur if the company's COTS software componant was discontinued? Although the initial cost and development time usually was reduced, far too often the company ends up with an increase in software component-integration work, a dependency on the COT vendor, security issues and incompatibilities from future changes. The custom business and web application development that we create for clients is actually owned by them. They can keep the programs and tools as long as they like. Custom software development alleviates concerns that the one day-in and day-out programs a company relies on will suddenly not be available anymore. I really enjoy traveling to either new or exisiting clients in the Yellowstone vacinity. I have traveled into Yellowstone from the western side of the park with my Island Park friends more than a dozen times, in all season, in the last ten years. To folks that live in the area that may seem paltry, but to others who may have visited Yellowstone only once or never at all, there is envy. This big sky country is fabulous and I am envious of the people who live there year round.

Now for a nostalgic stroll back to the front page of the August 30 2012 EDITION of the Island Park News.
